Tacit Assumptions in the Field of Mathematical Software

The field of mathematical software began about 50 years ago. Tacit assumptions about the needs for mathematical software shaped the development of this area of study. Over the years, circumstances have changed and many of these assumptions are no longer valid. I will identify and discuss six such changing assumptions and raise questions about how these changes could influence the field going forward. Disclaimer: these observations are coming from a long distance perspective, from someone who is no longer actively working in this field of study.
