A Brief History of Numerical Libraries

As well as making valuable contributions to numerical algorithms, John Reid has always striven to make the algorithms available as quality software. We look at the development and influence of software libraries and packages for numerical computation, with an emphasis on software for numerical linear algebra.

We aim to include discussion of the linear algebra collection in the Handbook for Automatic Computation series, the HSL and NAG Libraries, LAPACK and its antecedents, and developments that have been important to the production of quality, portable software.
