Report on UKIESIAM Activities (August 1999 to July 2000) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) There have been four elections of officers since inception and the current postholders are President: J.T Stuart (until 31/3/01) Vice-President: D.J. Higham (until 31/3/01) Secretary/Treasurer: P.K. Jimack (until 31/3/02) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The section currently has 225 members (versus 187 when the section was founded). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 2000 Annual section meeting, Imperial College. This was another successful meeting, attended by 39 participants. A full report, written by James Blowey, was published in SIAM news. Apr 2000 British Applied Mathematics Colloquium, UMIST, Manchester. SIAM sponsored the invited lecture given by Jim Yorke of The University of Maryland whose presentation was entitled "The double pendulum, an unmodellable physical system". Jul 2000 Numerical Analysis Summer School, Durham. The section sponsored two prizes for the best presentation by a Ph.D. student in each of the two weeks of the Summer School. A report on the Summer School, written by Alan Craig and including details of the student prize winners appeared in the November issue of SIAM News. Plans for the future. 1. Following discussion at last year's annual meeting it was decided that, for the time-being at least, we should not seek to expand the section to include members from European countries. 2. Discussions referred to in last year's report concerning the possibility of holding a future SIAM annual meeting in either the UK or in Ireland have so far failed to come up with a suitable venue. Members suggestions on this matter would be most welcome. SIAM is however holding a joint conference with the European Mathematical Society (EMS) in Berlin in September and clearly the degree of success of this will influence SIAM's views on holding future conferences in Europe. 3. To continue towards enhancing the visibility of the section we will again sponsor a keynote speaker at this year's BAMC conference in Reading in April. We are also seeking to sponsor prizes for best student papers or best posters at other conferences in the UK and Ireland. 4. We are continuing to look at further ways of supporting relevant meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and Ireland. Requests for such support are most welcome and will be considered at any time. Peter Jimack (20/11/2000).
