Report on UKIESIAM Activities (August 2000 to July 2001) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) There have been five elections of officers since inception (including an election for the posts of President and Vice-President this year) and the current postholders are: President: D.F. Parker (until 31/3/03) Vice-President: I.G. Graham (until 31/3/03) Secretary/Treasurer: P.K. Jimack (until 31/3/02) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The section currently has 255 members (versus 187 when the section was founded and 225 last year). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 2001 Annual section meeting, Strathclyde University, Glasgow. This was another successful meeting, attended by 43 participants. A full report, written by Any Wathen, was published in SIAM news. Apr 2001 British Applied Mathematics Colloquium, University of Reading. SIAM sponsored the invited lecture given by Richard James of The University of Minnesota. Apr 2001 British Applied Mathematics Colloquium, University of Reading. The section sponsored two prizes for the best presentations by a Ph.D. student throughout the BAMC2000. The prize winners were * Mr. A.S. Lawless: "Adjoint methods for data assimilation in numerical weather prediction" (University of Reading) * Mr. K. Ratcliffe: "Trapped modes in a two dimensional laterally coupled waveguide" (University of Loughborough). Plans for the future. 1. Following discussion at last year's annual meeting it was suggested the possibility of closer links between SIAM and the LMS might be investigated. SIAM do not have any schemes for joint membership with other organizations however closer links, in the form of a joint conference for example, are actively being investigated. 2. Last year the section sponsored the prizes for the best student presentations at the BAMC conference in Reading. Next year the BAMC is to be held jointly with the BMC at Warwick and the section sees this as one of the best opportunities each year to promote SIAM within the UK. We will continue our sponsorship of prizes for the best student presentations and one of the keynote speakers (Ingrid Daubechies, Princeton) is this years SIAM Lecturer. 3. We are continuing to look at further ways of supporting relevant meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and Ireland. So far we plan to support the Numerical Analysis Summer School in Durham in July and the Householder Meeting in Scotland in June. Requests for such support are most welcome and will be considered at any time. Peter Jimack (30/11/2001).
