Report on UKIESIAM Activities (August 2002 to July 2003) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) This year saw an election for the posts of President and Vice-President. The current officers are: President: M. Stynes (until 31/3/05) Vice-President: J. Aitchison (until 31/3/05) Secretary/Treasurer: A. Ramage (until 31/3/04) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The current membership stands at 279: this number has increased steadily each year since the section was founded in 1996 (with 187 members). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 2003 Annual section meeting, University of Bath This meeting was well-attended and featured a programme of five excellent speakers. Full details can be found on the section webpage or in the March 2003 edition of SIAM news. Jun 2003 5th Dublin Differential Equations Conference The section made a contribution to the support of postgraduate and postdoctoral attendees at this meeting, organised by Eugene O'Riordan. Plans for the future. 1. The 2004 Annual Meeting will take place at the University of Sheffield on January 9th. The invited speakers are Jack Dongarra, University of Tennessee Alistair Fitt, University of Southampton Pat Fitzpatrick, University College Cork David Thomson, The Met Office Lucy Wyatt, University of Sheffield. Full details can be found at http://www.maths.strath.ac.uk/ukiesiam/sheffield.html. 2. Arrangements are currently underway for holding a joint SIAM-LMS-IMA-RSS Meeting in the UK, possibly in September 2005. UKIESIAM has been represented at early planning meetings, and we expect this close involvement to continue. 3. We aim to return to sponsoring prizes for the best student presentations at the BAMC conference (to be held at the University of East Anglia in 2004). This was not done at Southampton in 2003 due to an administrative muddle, but tentative arrangements have already been made with the organisers at UEA. 4. We intend to sponsor student prizes at the Durham Numerical Analysis Summer School in July 2004. 5. We are always keen to support other relevant meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and Ireland. Requests for such support are welcome at any time.
