Report on UKIESIAM Activities (January 1997 to June 1998) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) There have been two elections of officers since inception and the current postholders are President: K.W. Morton (until 31/3/99) Vice-President: J.W. Dold (until 31/3/99) Secretary/Treasurer: D.J. Silvester (until 31/3/00) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The section currently has 194 members (versus 187 when the section was founded). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 1997 Inaugural section meeting, Manchester. This was attended by 46 participants. (A full report appeared in the April 97 issue of SIAM news.) Mar 1997 Special SIAM sponsored minisymposium on Microelectronics at British Applied Maths Colloquim, Edinburgh. Jan 1998 Annual section meeting, Manchester This was attended by 40 participants. Mar 1998 SIAM Numerical Combustion Conference, York The costs of this conference were partially underwritten by the section. In the event, the conference was very successful (over 200 particiapnts) and section support was not required. Mar 1998 Special SIAM sponsored lecture at British Applied Maths Colloquium, Brunel University, West London Jun 1998 Numerical Analysis and Computers--50 years of progress, Manchester. The costs of this conference were fully underwritten by the section. The meeting attracted 87 participants, and the current expectation is that section support will not be required. A full report will be published in SIAM news. Plans for the future. 1. We are currently setting up a dedicated WWW server to support the activities of the section. When installed this will have the URL http://www.siam.ac.uk/ 2. We are exploring ways of making SIAM facilities more readily available to members in the UK. In particular, discussions are taking place on the possibility of paying subscriptions in sterling. 3. We are continuing to work towards enhancing the visibility of SIAM in the UK and Ireland. We are particularly keen on recruiting more student members. In particular we would like to see a main stream SIAM conference (e.g. an applied linear algebra or dynamical systems meeting) being held in the near future in either the UK or in Ireland. 4. We are exploring the possibility of expanding the section to include members from European countries. ----------------- David Silvester 30/6/98
