Report on UKIESIAM Activities (July 1998 to July 1999) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) There have been three elections of officers since inception and the current postholders are President: J.T Stuart (until 31/3/01) Vice-President: D.J. Higham (until 31/3/01) Secretary/Treasurer: D.J. Silvester (until 31/3/00) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The section currently has 237 members (versus 187 when the section was founded). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 1999 Annual section meeting, Imperial College. This was a very successful meeting, attended by 61 participants. A full report was published in the April issue of SIAM news. Mar 1999 British Applied Mathematics Colloquium, Bath University. SIAM sponsored lectures given by James Robinson (inertial manifolds), Jonathan Partington (control) and David Hamill (dynamics). Jul 1999 ICIAM 99 meeting, Edinburgh. The section gave out seven travel grants to postgraduate students to help boost attendance. Plans for the future. 1. We are exploring ways of making SIAM facilities more readily available to members in the UK. 2. We are continuing to work towards enhancing the visibility of SIAM in the UK and Ireland. We are particularly keen on recruiting more student members. Discussions have taken place with the SIAM Executive Director on the possibility of holding the SIAM annual meeting in either the UK or in Ireland. (This meeting is being held in Puerto Rico in the year 2000.) 3. We are still exploring the possibility of expanding the section to include members from European countries. ----------------- David Silvester 10/11/99
