Report on UKIESIAM Activities (August 2004 to July 2005) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) This year saw an election for the posts of President and Vice-President. After an email ballot Nick Trefethen (Oxford) was elected as president and John Hogan (Bristol) as vice-president. We have enquired if we can make use of the anonymous ballot set up by SIAM for future elections. The current officers are: President: N. Trefethen (until 31/3/07) Vice-President: J. Hogan (until 31/3/07) Secretary/Treasurer: G.J. Lord (until 31/3/06) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The current membership stands at 320 (versus 187 members when founded and 275 last year). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. The section sponsored 3 prizes for the best presentations by a Ph.D. student and 1 prize for the best student poster. Plans for the future. 1.
