Report on UKIESIAM Activities (August 2006 to July 2007) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) This year saw elections for the posts of president and vice-president of the section: For president, Russell Davies (Cardiff) was elected ahead of Chris Farmer (Schlumberger/Oxford). For vice-president, Colin Please (Southampton) was elected ahead of Dwight Barkley (Warwick). The current officers are: President: R. Davies (until 31/3/09) Vice-President: C. Please (until 31/3/09) Secretary/Treasurer: S. Langdon (until 31/3/08) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The current membership stands at 370 (versus 187 members when founded and 350 last year). Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 2007 Annual section meeting, Oxford University A report on the meeting was published in the June 2007 edition of SIAM News. The section sponsored four prizes of £50 each for the best presentations by a PhD student. The section sponsored two prizes of £50 each for the best presentations by a PhD student. This prize money was matched by the conference organisers.
