Report on UKIESIAM Activities (August 2007 to July 2008) --------------------------------------------------------- Background. The United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland section of SIAM was established at the end of 1996. (The petition was approved by the council on 13th December, 1996.) This year saw an election for the post of secretary / treasurer of the section: Sue Dollar 37 votes Rob Scheichl 21 votes Sue Dollar took up the position on 1 April. The current officers are: President: R. Davies (until 31/3/09) Vice-President: C. Please (until 31/3/09) Secretary/Treasurer: S. Dollar (until 31/3/10) All SIAM members resident in the UK and Republic of Ireland are automatically members of the section (no section fees are levied). The current membership stands at 405 (versus 187 members when founded and 370 last year). 252 of these are non-student members. Sponsored meetings. The section has provided financial support for the following meetings, which are listed in chronological order. Jan 2008 Annual section meeting, Southampton University A report on the meeting was published in the May 2008 edition of SIAM News. Apr 2008 BAMC held at the University of Manchester. The section sponsored prizes totalling £250 for the best presentations by a PhD student. The section sponsored one prize of £50 for the best presentation by a PhD student. The ANNUAL MEETING will be held at the University of Limerick on Friday January 9th 2009. 2. We intend to sponsor student prizes at future BAMC. 3. We intend to sponsor student prizes at 23rd Biennial Conference on Numerical Analysis, University of Strathclyde. 4.
